Spend time with people that you love. It's that simple. Avoid the gifts and cards and charming words and take the time, because there is nothing more disturbing and more frightening than the thought of losing them.
Domino was rushed to the ER this afternoon for the second time in 10 days, this time for ingesting rat poison that she found while rummaging through the kitchen in hidden corners. Her boisterous excitement was suddenly transformed into an uncontrollable fear as we all tried to answer the questions of the EMT team, who had arrived within 2 minutes of my call to 911. Her dynamite strength shined as she welcomed the doctor's efforts to pump her stomach free of such deadly substances and I waited with Cecil at home.
Interestingly enough, I attended Saddleback Church this morning, leaving with an overwhelming sense of joy and support from the entire church body. The message centered on learning to love people by giving them the greatest gift: time. Rick Warren so casually and eloquently explained that no matter how hard we work, how many medals we win, how creative we are, how brilliantly successful we are, we all fall victim to time. We may be seemingly unlimited and unconstrained in accomplishments, but we are forever restrained by time. Therefore, make the most of it. For Domino, there were milliseconds where we considered the worst. She's alive and well now, but we will wait for Tuesday's follow up health report.
It's crisis that forces us to consider those we love the most. It's every day that we have a chance to make them feel loved. Do whatever it takes to make someone feel special today.
