first day of school

Remember the days of old, the anxiousness that loomed in your room the night before the first day of school? Don't lie, you didn't sleep that night because there is a universal all-nighter pulled by every student in grade school the night before day one. Yes, clothes were neatly arranged on the bed's end, shoes facing the wall below, the brand new mechanical pencils that you know you will lose within three days time tucked into your brand new backpack, and the perfect-first-day-of-school-lunch stacked on the top shelf of the refrigerator so it stays ultra-fresh. That was the night, the night that ended the last day of summer vacation and ushered you into yet another year of wondering why you had to go to school in the first place. Those were the days.

Today marked the flip side of the night-before-the-first-day-of-school. The boys headed off to the Top of the World Elementary school here in Laguna, only to come home a little relieved that they could again hear someone speaking their native language. They had a great day today and were apparently celebreties in their classes. It is sure to be a fantastic year.

I spent the afternoon playing with the boys in the ocean trying to catch the waves but ended up letting them catch me. A dinner on the deck with the ocean below ended this historic first day of school for us all. Tomorrow, we get to do it all over again.

Even though is was ages ago, I still remember that "first-day" feeling. Your description brought back so many great memories! I Love You, Mom
