the classics

I have become quite fond of classical music. I hear that it works wonders for your brain, for your attention span, for your motor skills, for your entire sense of well being. So, I have subscribed to turning on my huge stereo in my petite maison, enjoying the symphonic melodies all night long. And, for that matter, what a peaceful way to awake in the morning! I am recommending at least 20 minutes of classical tunes for you each day. Trust me, your memory will vastly improve.

I resumed the tennis shenanigans with the boys today. We spent a good while traversing the countryside au velo (on bike) as well. Just before arriving at the house, we passed by a field which will soon be full of sunflowers. For now, there are only a few peeking over the tall grass. Melvil, after cutting his way through the land, picked a sunflower just for me. What a nice surprise to brighten my day. You know how much I love sunflowers, so you know how much I smiled!

Last night I went to the Renoir, the American Film Theater here in Aix. I went to see "Broken English," a total chick-flick, but a cute movie. The humorous part was, however, that I met another Au Pair in the theater. After, we headed to the centre ville for a chat, and I enjoyed the evening listening to unbelievable stories of her world travels. Her name is Kim. She has been everywhere. Not kidding. We laughed at the happenstance every traveler encounters--from the spontaneaity required for successful travel to the mishaps that always destroy plans. We concluded that the first rule of traveling is this: don't make any plans except to arrive alive. It's true. I rather enjoyed my evening on the town, and another peaceful nights' rest welcomed me home with a bit of classical music lingering in my room.

As for what is to come, I am intensely researching different activities in which the boys can participate once in Laguna Beach, as well as researching a car for the family. In this 21st century age-of-information, I do not foresee myself surviving without the luxury of the internet. Moving across town is a headache enough! Try moving across the world!

Tomorrow I am off to the zoo and to a brilliant Chateau located in Salon, just west of Aix-en-Provence. You should know by now that you will be the first to hear about every detail.

The hills are alive with the sound of music

With songs they have sung for a thousand years

The hills fill my heart with the sound of music

My heart wants to sing every song it hears

My heart wants to beat like the wings of the birds

that rise from the lake to the trees

My heart wants to sigh like a chime that flies

from a church on a breeze

To laugh like a brook when it trips and falls over

stones on its way

To sing through the night like a lark who is learning to pray

I go to the hills when my heart is lonely

I know I will hear what I've heard before

My heart will be blessed with the sound of music

And I'll sing once more.

Dedicated to Hannah from the Von Trapp family.
